Most people on this earth are oblivious to the spirit world all around us. They go through life wondering
why this, that and the other thing has happened in their life. They are puzzled and angry with God. They blame the Lord for the unfortunate things that have taken place. Little do they realize that their own ungodly conduct and ignorance has opened the door to unseen darkness.
In the beginning when the Lord created the heavens and the earth the Lord separated the darkness and the light from each other.
Gen 1:. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
Gen 1:17 God set them { Sun, Moon and Stars} in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. NKJV
In bible usage darkness takes on a metaphoric meaning. Darkness can indicate judgement, distress, plagues, God’s anger, great tribulation as in the end time events coming on the earth.
Ex 10:21 Then the Lord said to Moses,”Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
Joel 2:2 A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, NKJV
Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. NKJV
The Lord God Almighty must clothe himself in deep darkness to prevent his people from being consumed.
Ps 18:11 He made darkness His secret place; His canopy around Him was dark waters And thick clouds of the skies. NKJV
The bible calls the Messiah the One who is able to penetrate the darkness of men’s hearts.
Isa 9: 2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. NLT
The Lord is our light which consumes the darkness.
Ex 13:21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people. NKJV
Ps 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? NKJV
In the NT darkness is a powerful moral metaphor for sinful lifestyles and unholy rebellion.
Rom 13: 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light NKJV
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. NKJV
1 Thess 5:5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. NKJV
Col 1: 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, NKJV
Jesus Our Lord taught that human nature is based on darkness and tends toward darkness.
John 3:18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.” NLT
Jesus Himself proclaimed that He is the Light.
John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” NKJV
Walking in the light
1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. NKJV
Satan, the Prince of Darkness, blinds the people of this world so they can not perceive the Light.
2 Cor 4:3 If there is anything hidden about our message, it is hidden only to someone who is lost.
4 The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like. 5 We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord. He also sent us to be your servants. 6 The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. CEV
There is a Greek NT word called Zophos used only four times in the NT. Twice by both Simon Peter and twice by Jude the Lord’s brother. It means such darkness that it can be felt.
2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; NKJV
2 Peter 2:17 These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. NKJV
Jude . 6 And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. NKJV
Jude 13 raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” NKJV
